Is Gylfi Sigurdsson closing in on a return to professional soccer? One report Monday says talks are underway for the former Iceland star to move to Major League Soccer.
Sigurdsson could soon sign for former Everton teammate Wayne Rooney‘s D.C. United — which would be a controversial move for player and club, two years after he last played in the Premier League.
What is the Gylfi Sigurdsson controversy?
In July 2021, Sigurdsson — identified only as a “Premier League footballer” at the time — was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse of a minor. Icelandic media soon reported on the player’s identity, and Everton immediately suspended Sigurdsson. He did not play again for the club before his contract expired in 2022.
After an 18-month investigation, Greater Manchester Police cleared SIgurdsson of the charges against him in April. But the midfielder, whose Iceland career ended in 2020, has not been able to find a new club in light of the horrific accusations lodged against him.
Sigurdsson’s arrival would be unpopular
Although it appears the process to sign Sigurdsson is only just underway, fans have already gone on record about the potential signing — and they’re not happy.
Reports have stressed that no official offer has been made, and D.C. United‘s investigation of Sigurdsson’s past could easily yield unsavory results. But just as Major League Soccer‘s appeal to fans is greater than ever — given Lionel Messi‘s imminent entry into the league — approving Sigurdsson’s transfer will take quite a bit of careful investigating and rationalizing.
