Tottenham showed no sign of a Harry Kane hangover as they overcame Manchester United 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to secure a crucial three points in their first home game of the season.
The result was not without controversy, coming only days after United were fortunate not to concede an injury-time penalty against goalkeeper Andre Onana as they faced Wolves.
This time, it was a decision which came against Manchester United, with the score at 0-0 when Cristian Romero’s arm was outstretched as it blocked Alejandro Garnacho’s shot.
Referee Michael Oliver and VAR did not award a penalty and the game continued, with Ange Postecoglou’s side going on to win.
Early second half goal
Spurs opened the scoring through Pape Matar Sarr’s first goal for the club only four minutes into the second period.
Dejan Kulusevski broke down the right flank and Lisandro Martinez could only deflect the ball into Sarr’s path for a rifled effort into the back of the net.
United fought to get back into the game, with Antony hitting the post with a curling effort which almost found its way in.
Nail in the coffin
It was subtitute Ben Davies who would claim the goal which settled the tie and doubled Tottenham’s lead.
Ivan Perisic came down the left and fed it to the Welshman and his scuffed effort again took an unfortunate deflection off Lisandro Martinez, bobbling its way across the line to give Spurs a second goal.
The result means that Manchester United drop to midtable while Tottenham join Brighton, Liverpool and Brentford in being unbeaten after two games played.
