It is the story of the day. The Premier League has accused Manchester City of a series of irregularities in its financial accounts which in effect mean that they believe the club to have been breaking league finance rules.
The period under scrutiny by the Premier League runs from 2009 to 2018, coinciding with the arrival of the Abu Dhabi ownership of Sheikh Mansour at the club in 2008.
Of the investigation process, which has been ongoing since 2018, Pep Guardiola was defiant in the face of questions last May.
“When they are accused of something, I ask them to tell me about it,” Guardiola declared.
“They explain and I believe them. I said to them, ‘if you lie to me, the day after I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend anymore.
“I put my faith in you because I believe you from day one and I defend the club because of that.”
Manchester City are accused of over 100 instances of cheating
It has been a difficult day for the Premier League champions, with the period of their alleged rule-breaking encompassing three Premier League title wins.
Whilst there isn’t a precedent for the titles being taken away from the Blues, the Premier League has the scope to fine, institute a point-deduction or even remove Manchester City from the Premier League.
After the league’s statement was released on Monday morning. Manchester City produced a 79-word statement expressing their surprise at the accusations.
“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with,” the club statement read.
“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an Independent Commission, to partially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.
“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
