No. 12 Oklahoma leads Texas 20-17 after one half of what has been a delicious, deep-fried, bacon-wrapped mess of a Red River Rivalry football game. Longhorns star quarterback Quinn Ewers threw two first-quarter interceptions, while Texas executed a fake punt, recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown and a fumble was overturned after review.
That was only across the first six minutes of the game!
Things have settled down slightly since. Both teams have been feeling each other out after burning off the nerves, but right now the one thing that is keeping this close is the red zone. Finishing drives has been a problem for the Longhorns all season, and the trend continues Saturday. The Longhorns have had two red-zone possessions so far and have managed only a field goal. The Sooners have done a much better job as all four of their scores have come from inside the 20. While Oklahoma had to settle for field goals twice, the second was due more to running out of time at the end of the half than execution.
Adjustments will be key for both teams coming out of the half. Oklahoma’s defense has been the more disruptive, but Texas has been able to hit more big plays to average 6.3 yards per play. Oklahoma is doing a better job of staying on schedule, but it’s hard to know if that will remain the case if the Sooners don’t start running the ball better; OU running backs have rushed for only 42 yards on 18 carries.
What we do know is the Sooners will get the ball to open the second half with a chance to extend the lead to two scores.
CBS Sports will be with you throughout the game on Saturday as Texas clashes with Oklahoma in the annual Red River Rivalry game.
