There’s worrying news for Liverpool as it emerges that Virgil Van Dijk‘s injury could be worse than first thought.
The Dutch defender was taken off at half time against Brentford on Monday and now faces a race against time to be fit to face Real Madrid next month.
The injury hasn’t exactly come at a good time for Jurgen Klopp with a congested run of fixtures coming up.
Next up for the Reds is Wolves in the FA Cup this weekend, while their Premier League games before the Madrid game include Chelsea and Everton.
Klopp had initially played down the Dutchman’s substitution on Monday as a precautionary measure, but a number of outlets, including ‘The Athletic’ and the ‘Liverpool Echo’ are now reporting that the issue is more serious.
Out until February at least
The reports suggest that Van Dijk will be out for the rest of the month…at least. Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield on February 21.
The former Celtic and Southampton defender will undergo further tests soon to determine the exact nature of his injury and Liverpool will then have a better idea of the timescale.
After a poor start to their Premier League campaign, the Reds are currently down in sixth place and can scarcely afford many more slip ups if there are to claw their way towards the Champions League spots.
As things stand they are seven behind fourth-placed Manchester United and 16 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
