The Bruins made a big splash ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, acquiring defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway from the Capitals.
Boston has had its eyes on trading for a left-shot defenseman for some time now. The club had been tied to Jakob Chychrun, Vladislav Gavrikov, Jake McCabe and others, but ultimately made a deal with Washington once the Capitals made Orlov available.
Orlov boosts their defensive unit, which already is one of the strongest in the league. He’s a mobile, puck-moving defenseman that can also play gritty. He won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.
In addition, the Bruins bring in Hathaway to shore up its bottom-six forward group. The 31-year-old is a hard forechecker and can get under opponent’s skin with his physicality and energy. He’s a perfect fit for Boston.
