Purdue will be seeking to solidify its claim for the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament as it heads to Minneapolis for the Big Ten Tournament after winning the league’s regular season title by three games. While the Boilermakers headline the league’s contingent of national title hopefuls, there are plenty of other storylines entering the league tournament, which begins Wednesday.
No. 3 seed Nebraska and No. 4 seed Northwestern each entered the final weekend of the regular season regarded as projected NCAA Tournament teams but still on the bubble in Jerry Palm’s Bracketology. No. 7 seed Iowa stood among the “First 4 Out” in Palm’s projection. No. 8 seed Michigan State lost at Indiana on Sunday in a result that could also inject some uncertainty into the Spartans’ fate for the Big Dance.
The Big Ten Tournament will help sort out much of the league’s bubble drama and could also produce a Cinderella story or two. Penn State reached last year’s title game as a No. 10 seed and nearly knocked off top-seeded Purdue. Ohio State won its first three games in last year’s event as the No. 13 seed to reach the semifinals. This year, the No. 10 seed Buckeyes could be a sleeper candidate again. They have won four straight under interim coach Jake Diebler and knocked off Purdue on Feb. 18.
