Alabama left no doubt about who the SEC’s top dog would be entering the conference’s postseason tournament in Nashville next week. The No. 2-ranked Crimson Tide won the league outright with one game to play and staked their claim as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, a distinction that led to a postseason conference title when Alabama was in the same spot two years ago.
Alabama will have a tough track to repeating the success it had two years ago with No. 2 seed Texas A&M hot on its trail. The Aggies defeated Alabama on Saturday in their respective regular-season finales, finishing one game off of Bama’s pace at the top and three games clear of the next-best team in the league.
A Bama-A&M rematch would not be until the tourney finale, but there are plenty of other tricky spots in the SEC bracket for contenders to slip up. No. 6 seed Vanderbilt is playing its best basketball of the Jerry Stackhouse era, No. 3 seed Kentucky is firing on all cylinders geared up for March and the likes of Tennessee and Arkansas feel criminally under-seeded at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively, based on the talent and coaching within those programs. It’s Bama’s title to lose, but anyone could emerge next week as the victor in Nashville.
