Day 1 of the 2023 ACC Tournament is in the books, and it featured some drama as the field shrunk from 15 teams to 12 entering Wednesday’s second-round action. The top four seeds each have byes into Thursday’s quarterfinal round, but the opening two days of the tournament often carry implications both for this week and beyond with Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament looming this weekend.
No. 13 seed Georgia Tech began the day by edging No. 12 seed Florida State 61-60 to end the Seminoles’ season with a disappointing 9-23 record. The Yellow Jackets will play No. 5 seed Pitt on Wednesday. In Tuesday’s second game, No. 10 seed Boston College beat No. 15 seed Louisville 80-62, advancing to face No. 7 seed North Carolina on Wednesday in a critical game for the Tar Heels’ bubble hopes. The outcome also ended the Cardinals’ first season under coach Kenny Payne with a dismal 4-28 record.
Finally, in the nightcap, No. 11 seed Virginia Tech got a clutch late dunk from Justyn Mutts and outlasted No. 14 seed Notre Dame 67-64. The Hokies, who won the tournament last year as the No. 7 seed, will play No. 6 seed NC State in Wednesday’s second round.
The second round action tips off at noon ET on Wednesday with No. 8 seed Syracuse taking on No. 9 seed Wake Forest. Three more games ensue from there, and by day’s end, the field will be down to just eight teams.
