The 2023 American Athletic Conference Tournament bracket is set and games get started on Thursday. This marks the final year of the AAC as currently constructed, and the league tournament is shaping up to be a good one. While No. 1 seed Houston and No. 2 seed Memphis are projected as the only at-large NCAA Tournament teams, there is a deep group of quality opponents behind them with eyes set on making a run.
No. 3 seed Tulane beat Memphis twice during the regular season, and No. 5 seed Temple pulled off one of the top upsets of the season on the road against the Cougars. No. 4 seed Cincinnati is also on the rise under second-year coach Wes Miller as the program prepares to join the Big 12 for next season.
Even No. 6 seed Wichita State and No. 7 seed UCF have proven competitive throughout the season and look capable of pulling upsets. The action starts Thursday with three first-round games, and the winners of those contests will advance to Friday’s quarterfinals. A champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon just before the NCAA Tournament Selection Show.
The Cougars are the favorites and two-time defending AAC Tournament champions. Most of the field aside from Memphis, however, is fighting for its NCAA Tournament life. That should make for a compelling event as the league prepares to bid farewell to Cincinnati, Houston and UCF once the season concludes.
