Southwest Florida’s Toughest Holes
Each week we will introduce you to one of the toughest holes golfers will face playing in Southwest Florida. Not only will we tell you which holes are most challenging but also give you how-to tips to conquer these beasts. or at least not have to color a solid square on your scorecard.
Course: Old Corkscrew Golf Club
Address: 17320 Corkscrew Road, Estero, 33928
The Hole: No. 9, 423 yards, Par 4
About the course: Old Corkscrew is a Jack Nicklaus-designed course. It is 7,400 yards and a par 72. The course has a 76.6 rating with a slope of 151. This is one of the toughest courses in the area. Nicklaus put the water and trees in a position where they come into play on virtually every hole.
How to get your best score: The 9th hole is as demanding as they come. It is a slight dogleg right with water right off the tee. This is a positional hole that demands a good drive off the tee. If you are a slicer you have NO CHANCE as there are several trees there also.
Your second shot must carry a large bunker to a very tough elevated green. If you happen to miss it right the water comes into play again. Once you get to the green your skills will be tested with the Nicklaus rolling green.
The key to this hole is positioning your drive on the left side of the fairway so you can get a good angle to the green coming in. Great risk-reward hole.
