Quarterfinal matchups for the Big East Tournament are set as the action ramps up Thursday at Madison Square Garden with the conference’s top teams. Those who advanced from Wednesday’s first round were No. 6 seed Villanova, No. 8 seed St. John’s and No. 10 seed DePaul, but each will have their work cut out for them as they try to extend their stays.
Up first in the quarterfinals, No. 1 seed Marquette looks to build on a six-game winning streak and potentially play its way into consideration for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament against St. John’s. In the second game of the morning session, No. 4 seed UConn and No. 5 seed Providence play in the first game of the week for both teams after they split their regular-season series.
The first game of the evening wave pits No. 2 seed Xavier against DePaul, which advanced with a dramatic win over No. 7 seed Seton Hall on Wednesday. Finally, No. 3 seed Creighton will take on Villanova in the nightcap as the Wildcats try to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive against a Bluejays squad they defeated on Feb. 25.
After a hotly contested regular season, especially among the league’s top five teams, this should be one of the best conference tournaments in the country heading into Selection Sunday.
