The winner of the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic is off to another red hot start in Detroit.
Nate Lashley, who took home the 2019 tournament at 25-under par, took an early lead on the field on Thursday morning when he knocked home a hole-in-one on his second tee shot of the day.
Lashley, who teed off on the back nine and had made a par on his opening hole, stepped to the No. 11 tee — a par-3 playing 217 yards — with a middle-iron in hand as he stared down the smaller, circular green which is surrounded by bunkers on three sides.
Not to be deterred, the world No. 123 player hoisted a baby-cut in the air and watched as it continued to drift right.
Though it landed in the fringe just a few feet to the right of the hole location which was already on the right side of the green, it took a friendly hop back meet toward the hole, bounced twice and trickled in.
Lashley, who threw his arms in the air in disbelief, shared a high-five with his caddy as he’d taken a one-stroke lead on the tournament before 7:30 in the morning on day one.
It marks the eighth hole in one at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the first since Max Homa dropped home his tee shot on No. 15 in last year’s tournament.
