Here’s the latest news and buzz on the Mets‘ top prospects…
INF Luisangel Acuña, Triple-A Syracuse
Acuna probably doesn’t want to see the calendar flip to July on Monday, because June has been a stellar month for the 22-year-old.
Acuna blasted his fifth home run of the season on Saturday night on the first pitch of the game, and in the month of June he’s slashed .300/.352/.420 with two homers, 13 RBI, and 16 runs scored.
RHP Christian Scott, Triple-A Syracuse
Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza said on Sunday that Wednesday’s starter for the Mets is currently “TBA,” but all signs point towards Scott getting called back up to make the start as the Mets continue their 17-game stretch without an off day.
Scott has been terrific in four starts since being sent back down, and it’s very clear that Mets want him to stay on a regular schedule while limiting his pitches and innings. On Tuesday, Scott allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings against Buffalo.
RHP Brandon Sproat, Double-A Binghamton
Sproat’s ridiculous season continued on Tuesday when he went 6.0 shutout innings against Portland. He allowed just five hits while striking out three and walking two.
The right-hander has certainly made a name for himself this season, pitching to a sublime 1.61 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 67.0 innings for Brooklyn and Binghamton
RHP Blade Tidwell, Triple-A Syracuse
The Mets’ top pitching prospect has hit a bit of a speed bump since getting the call up to Triple-A, but he turned in one of his finest starts his last time out.
Facing Rochester last Sunday, Tidwell went 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. He did only strike out one batter, though, and he walked three.
In six Triple-A appearances, Tidwell has a 5.00 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.
OF Ryan Clifford, Double-A Binghamton
The power-hitting left-hander had a bit of a down week, but he did turn things around on Friday when he blasted a solo home run against Portland.
The Mets promoted Clifford to Double-A in hopes that being away from the Coney Island wind would improve his power numbers, and Clifford now has nine home runs and 17 extra-base hits in 37 games for the Rumble Ponies, compared to one home run and seven extra-base hits in 31 games for the Cyclones,
Two-way player Nolan McLean, Double-A Binghamton
McLean was used exclusively has a pitcher this week, as his last at-bat came on June 20 (He did hit a home run against Akron that day).
Facing Portland on Friday, McLean allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five and walking one against Portland.
McLean didn’t make it out of the third inning in his previous start, so this was a good bounce-back performance for the right-hander, who likely profiles as a power arm out of the bullpen at the major league level.
