Defending champion Michael Balcar, Maxwell Moldovan and Ali Khan are tied atop the leaderboard after Monday’s first round of the 103rd Ohio Open Championship at Westfield Country Club.
The trio shot five-under 65s on Westfield’s South course and will play the North on Tuesday. Ten other golfers are within two shots of the lead in the three-round, 54-hole event.
Balcar carded six birdies and one bogey in his opening round after firing a 14-under 196 to win last year’s event by a stroke.
Moldovan, a Green High School alum who recently turned pro and competes on the PGA Americas Tour after an outstanding four-year career at Ohio State, carded seven birdies in his opening round. That tied for the most birdies on the day with Kevin Hall, another former Buckeye who won the Big Ten championship in 2004. Hall is part of a three-way tie for fourth place, a shot back of the leaders.
Khan, a Ball State senior, highlighted his first round with a pair of eagles. That included holing out from 134 yards on the par-4 third.
There will be a cut of the top 60 and ties after the second round.
