The Yankees reached perhaps their lowest point of the season on Thursday following an 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, who completed a sweep of the Yankees in the Bronx after entering the series six games under .500.
It marked the 14th loss in the Yankees’ last 19 games as they continue to search for answers on how to right the ship.
“We’re not really clicking the way we were to start the season,” Aaron Judge said following a rare 0-for-4 day at the plate. “It’s a long season, we’re going to have a tough spell here and there. If you look back at past World Series champions they have all had a tough skid at some point. I think that’s what defines a team: How do we respond out of this? How are we going to take the next step to get things going back in our direction? We’ve got everybody in this room who knows how to do that, it’s going to take all of us coming together to get through it.”
Judge, as in years past, has been one of the few consistent players on the team as he puts up another MVP season. But even with the addition of Juan Soto, the offense has struggled outside of those two while the starting pitching has also taken a step back in recent weeks, often digging the team into deficits early in the games.
The task to turn things around doesn’t get any easier for the Yankees as the Boston Red Sox – winners of their last four and a team that took two of three from the Bombers at Fenway Park last month – come into town for a three-game series.
“You have to go through things like this,” Judge said. “We’re going to come out better for it going through these troubles. You gotta get beat down a little bit to kinda see what you’re made of and we’re going to find out real soon.”
