Aug. 13—NASCAR officials will make a tough decision this week after the mayhem that took place on the final lap Sunday at Richmond.
With little chance of making the playoffs on points, Austin Dillon took out both Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin while coming to the checkered flag.
Dillon, who hadn’t won a race in two years, was poised for the win when the race went into overtime.
Logano got the jump on the restart, and basically Dillon drove through his car entering Turn 3 and then got into the back of Hamlin’s car to secure the victory.
Dillon said he did whatever was needed to secure a win and make the playoff field.
What will be interesting in the future is whether Logano or Hamlin returns the favor when they’re racing with Dillon.
Everyone kind of expected Dillon to do a bump-and-run on Logano at the finish, but he definitely caused him to spin and then basically put Hamlin into the wall.
It’s doubtful NASCAR will strip Dillon of the victory, but the question is whether they will issue a monetary fine and subtract some points from the team.
Young racers competing at local tracks and with regional touring series will view the Richmond finish and believe it’s OK to wreck another driver to secure a victory.
That’s not a good lesson for younger racers to learn when it comes to respecting competitors.
A good example of respecting your competitors took place in the Tom Wood Honda 150 for the CRA Street Stocks Saturday at Anderson Speedway.
Dalton Conner and Jason Thompson raced nose-to-tail for second place for 75 laps without taking each other out of contention.
It was good, hard racing with Xavier King running a close fourth and never making contact with Conner.
That’s what racing is all about, hard racing but with respect for your competitors.
