It has been quite a week in New York for Covington Twp.’s Alex Yankowski.
On Saturday at Fonda Speedway, he became the youngest Modified champion in track history. Then Wednesday, he claimed the Super DIRTcar Series third annual SummerFAST Speedweek title with a victory at Fulton Speedway.
At Fonda, Yankowski entered Championship Night with a 14-point lead in the division standings over Jack Lehner of Saratoga Springs, New York. In the 30-lap feature, Lehner finished third but Yankowski placed seventh to win the title by six points, 651-645.
The 20-year old did it without winning a feature. He had eight top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 11 races to become only the sixth driver in track history to win the Modified title without a victory.
SummerFAST Speedweek was a scheduled to be a three-race event at three New York tracks. However, the opener at Brewerton Speedway on Monday was rained out.
At Land of Legends Raceway in Canandaigua, New York, on Tuesday, Yankowski started second, led early for 31 laps, and finished second in the 75-lap feature behind Mat Williamson of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.
Then at Fulton Speedway on Wednesday, Yankowski started seventh in the 75-lap feature. He took the lead on a lap-61 restart, then held off the last-lap challenge of Adam Pierson from Fairlee, Vermont, to take the checkered flag.
It was his second career Super DIRTcar Series win. With his second-place finish at Land of Legends, he won the SummerFAST championship by 15 points over Matt Sheppard of Savannah, New York.
