Aug. 27—Whether it wants to admit it or not, NASCAR has a problem with cars becoming airborne at recent races.
Corey LaJoie became airborne following a spin at Michigan International Speedway two weeks ago.
This past weekend at Daytona, there was a scary crash involving Josh Berry.
Berry’s car flipped over after a spin, sliding on the roof into the SAFER barrier and then somersaulting down the track before coming to a stop.
Prior to that incident, the car of Michael McDowell became airborne and was only stopped from flipping over after contact with the car of Joey Logano.
Logano said after his release from the infield care center NASCAR isn’t doing enough to keep the cars from becoming airborne.
The only good thing from these incidents is none of the drivers received serious injuries.
NASCAR did mandate a second fin on the compartment for the Daytona race, but it didn’t prevent the cars from becoming airborne.
As was noted in a recent broadcast, NASCAR has invested a considerable amount of money in trying to develop a formula to keep the cars from flipping.
Time to go back to the wind tunnel for more testing.
The other notable fact from the Daytona race was there were three multi-car incidents, and almost every car running at the finish sustained some damage.
Harrison Burton, racing for the Wood Brothers, won the Daytona race and punched his ticket for the playoffs.
With one race remaining, Bubba Wallace and Ross Chastain are on the outside of the playoff field, and both almost need a victory to advance.

Anderson fans of sprint car racing know Tyler Roahrig is one of the best when it comes to pavement racing.
Roahrig, for the fifth time, won a 500 Sprint Car Tour event at Berlin Raceway and last weekend scored another victory at Kalamazoo Speedway.
The only thing keeping Roahrig from a championship is the fact he missed a race earlier this year.
The Kenyon Midget Series conducted three races at the two Michigan tracks over the weekend.
Dameron Taylor won both feature races at Berlin to give him four on the season and 32 in his career with the series.
Ryan Huggler scored his first victory in several years at Kalamazoo.
Both series will be making one more appearance at Anderson Speedway in October.
Anderson’s Greg VanAlst will be competing in the NASCAR Xfinity race Saturday at Darlington Speedway.
