The Mets’ decision is made on who to call up from the minors as MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players, and it doesn’t include exciting prospect Luisangel Acuña.
On Sunday, the team officially announced that LHP Alex Young and INF Pablo Reyes were the selections to join the team in Chicago.
Young, who was already with the team on Saturday, was recalled from Triple-A after spending some time with the Mets earlier in the season, owning a 1.29 ERA in seven innings.
Reyes, who was not on the 40-man roster, had his contract selected.
The moves mean Acuña, for now at least, will remain in Syracuse where he’s had a solid season, batting .265. The 22-year-old made it a difficult decision for New York with his play of late and finished 3-for-5 with a triple and stolen base on Saturday.
“For Acuña, he’s just gotta continue to play,” said manager Carlos Mendoza about the decision. “Like I said, there’s not gonna be many starts here and it’s important for his development to continue to play everyday.
“And, again, we still got a month to go here. A lot can change. There were a lot of names in the conversation, Acuña was one of them, but we decided to go with Pablo.”
Meanwhile, Reyes has excelled in Triple-A this season and also has major league experience, spending time with the Boston Red Sox as recently as this year.
In 58 games with Syracuse, the 30-year-old slashed .283/.361/.478 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI to go along with 10 steals in 12 tries.
“He’s a guy that can play all positions in the infield, he can even go in the outfield if we need to,” Mendoza said about what he likes out of Reyes’ skill set. “He’s gonna give you good at-bats. The speed, he’s a guy that can steal you a base. The experience, he’s a guy that’s been up and down and has been in this league before.
“There’s a lot of different ways he can impact the game and can help you win a baseball game.”
