It’s time to start determining a 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champ.
Well, OK, it’s almost time.
This weekend brings Step 1 as the Round of 16 begins at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It’s the Round of 16 because 16 drivers and teams qualified for NASCAR’s version of a postseason.
As for the companion Xfinity Series, there are still three races remaining before its playoffs begin with the Round of 12 later this month at Kansas.
Saturday: Xfinity race at Atlanta, but first there’s qualifying
11 a.m.: Xfinity Series qualifying (USA Network).
12:30 p.m.: Cup Series qualifying (USA).
2:30: Xfinity Series “Countdown to Green” (USA).
3: Xfinity Series Focused Health 250 (USA).
Sunday: Quaker State 400 at Atlanta revs up the NASCAR playoffs
2:30 p.m.: “Countdown to Green” (USA).
3: Quaker State 400 at Atlanta.
How does the NASCAR Cup Series playoff system work?
NASCAR uses three cut-down rounds before reaching the championship race at Phoenix in November.
The 16 teams starting the playoffs will be cut to the top 12 after three playoff races.
Down to eight after three more playoff races.
Down to four after three more.
And finally, one race decides it all, Nov. 10 at Phoenix.
