With the Yankees in Chicago as they gear up for a three-game series against the Cubs starting on Friday afternoon, general manager Brian Cashman gave his perspective on the team’s left field situation, telling reporters that Alex Verdugo gives the team the best chance to win right now over top prospect Jasson Dominguez.
While Cashman admitted things can always change, Verdugo will continue to be the starting left fielder moving forward.
“If he comes (to the big leagues), he’s got to play everyday,” Cashman said about Dominguez who is currently crushing the ball in Triple-A.
In 41 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the 21-year-old is slashing .313/.371/.497 with seven home runs, 24 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
Dominguez got a late start to his campaign this year while recovering from Tommy John surgery he got in September of last year. Before that, the outfielder had played in eight big league games for New York after getting called up and had a .980 OPS with four homers.
Meanwhile, Verdugo has struggled in his first season in pinstripes, hitting .235 with a .652 OPS in 134 games since coming over in an offseason trade with the Boston Red Sox.
It’s been the worst season of the 28-year-old’s career as the eight-year veteran has a career .745 OPS in 785 games. He will become a free agent at the end of the year.
