The Hurricanes already lost one top winger for the season and may be losing another.
Carolina announced Monday that forward Andrei Svechnikov is out indefinitely. He is awaiting another opinion from doctors before a decision on a procedure is made.
Svechnikov has been one of the top contributors to the Hurricanes since arriving in Carolina five years ago. If the All-Star forward were to miss extensive time, that would be another brutal blow to the Hurricanes, who are already without Max Pacioretty’s services for the remainder of the season.
While the Hurricanes have been one of the top teams in the East all season long, the club is currently in a battle with the Devils for first place in the Metropolitan Division. Both teams have 94 points as of March 14.

The Sporting News has the latest news and updates on Svechnikov’s injury status.
What is Andrei Svechnikov’s injury?
Svechnikov was injured during the Hurricanes’ 4-0 loss to the Golden Knights on March 11.
He finished the game and it was not known that Svechnikov was injured until it was announced that he would not be available for the team’s game the next day against the Devils.
While the team is calling it a knee injury, Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the concern is a torn ACL.
Hearing Carolina is waiting for a second opinion on Andrei Svechnikov’s injury. There’s concern it’s a torn ACL, which could end his season — but the player and the Hurricanes are, understandably, waiting until all options exhausted. Hoping for the best.

If it is indeed a torn ACL, that almost guarantees that Svechnikov’s season is over.
When will Andrei Svechnikov return?
Carolina announced that Svechnikov will be out indefinitely as the team awaits a second opinion on his knee.
As Friedmann reported, the likely scenario, and fear of the Hurricanes, is that the Russian winger is going to require season-ending surgery.
