Mets top prospect Jett Williams made his Triple-A debut Tuesday with Syracuse and picked up his first hit.
The 20-year-old finished 1-for-4 and RBI a walk and two strikeouts in Syracuse’s 15-7 win over the Charlotte Knights.
Williams’ lone hit came in the sixth when he bounced a double down the third base line scoring JT Schwartz and putting the Syracuse Mets up 8-6.
This season has been a tough one for Williams. The Mets’ No. 1 prospect according to Joe DeMayo’s rankings, was out most of the year with a wrist injury he sustained in April that required surgery in June.
However, he returned to Double-A Binghamton in August but struggled at that level, going 8-for-44 (.182) with one walk and 20 strikeouts in the 10 games back with the Rumble Ponies.
Overall, Williams has 18 hits in 95 at-bats (.190) with four doubles, a triple and three RBI in 26 games across Double-A and Single-A St. Lucie. But with the minor league season coming to an end soon, the Mets wanted to see whether Williams can excel in the Triple-A level. And with the call-up of Luisangel Acuna, the organization promoted the shortstop to Syracuse on Sunday.
In Tuesday’s win, Mike Vasil struggled again for Syracuse. He allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk over four innings while striking out just three.
In 28 games (26 starts) in Triple-A, the 24-year-old has pitched to a 6.16 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.
Outfielder Drew Gilbert – the Mets’ No. 3 prospect according to DeMayo — went 0-for-3 with an RBI a walk and one strikeout.
