The Mets’ plan for the doubleheader on Monday in Atlanta is not finalized – a game that will go ahead after New York scored a 5-0 win over Milwaukee and Arizona beat San Diego on Sunday.
Carlos Mendoza indicated potential starting pitchers, saying that right-handers Luis Severino and Tylor Megill are “in play” and the “two options that we will consider” to start the games.
With the season coming down to one day and two games to clinch a postseason berth, Mendoza said he would sign up for that every day.
“Especially with the way we started the year, before the year, nobody expected us to be in this position and here we are with a chance to do something special this late,” he said. “And that’s what we’ll do. We’ll go back at Atlanta, we’ll get that last one and we’ll go from there.”
Severino, with a 3.91 ERA and 1.242 WHIP in 182 innings this year, got roughed up on Tuesday in the only game the Mets played in Atlanta. The veteran allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in 4.0 innings with five strikeouts.
In three starts against the Braves this year, Severino has surrendered eight runs on 18 hits in 14 innings.
Megill, 3.98 ERA and 1.272 WHIP in 72.1 innings on the year, lasted four innings his last time out allowing just one run on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts against the Phillies.
The 29-year-old allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over 6 innings in a July 27 start aginst the Braves, surrendering three homers.
That would put Sean Manaea in a position to start Game 1 of the Wild Card round game on short rest; “hopefully that’s the case,” the manager said before Sunday’s game.
“Right now, all hands on deck,” he added. “We gotta get there first, got a game today and then continue to treat it one day at a time.”
With a win, the Mets did the first part of getting to Monday, but still need a win in one of the two games to make it to the Wild Card Round.
Heading into the game on Sunday what should have been the end of the season, Mendoza said he felt pretty good with the state of the clubhouse.
“I like where the guys are at mentally, how they’re interacting today, just the whole vibe,” the manager added. “I know it’s been hard for us the past three games, but, hey, we got an opportunity to do something special today. So that’s what we’ll do.
“We gotta go out there win a baseball game and see what happens after the game.”
