Mets’ Brandon Nimmo is dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, the outfielder told the Athletic after Sunday’s loss to open the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Nimmo has been dealing with the ailment since May and said he irritated the injury in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies.
“Right now it hurts pretty good,” Nimmo told The Athletic after the game Sunday. “The second-to-last game against Philadelphia, I did something on the field and made it quite a bit worse. … When it gets inflamed and flares up, it’s a harder thing to calm down.”
In the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday night, the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts lined a ball down the third base line and Nimmo did not appear to be running at his normal speed as he chased the ball into the corner. The double scored three runs to give the game its final score, 9-0.
The outfielder told The Athletic he isn’t bothered when at the plate or when throwing the ball, but feels pain when running.
“I think when I really need it, I’m probably not 100 percent, but I can get going pretty good,” he said. “But it’s uncomfortable.”
Nimmo was lifted for pinch-hitter Luisangel Acuna to lead off the top of the ninth. He finished the day 0-for-3 at the plate.
Despite the injury he doesn’t anticipate having to be removed from the lineup, adding “You do whatever you can in order to get out there and help in any way you can.”
The plan is to manage the injury and then treat it in the offseason.
“It’s something that we know will get better with time,” Nimmo told The Athletic. “After the season, it’s at least a PRP injection, but you can’t do that right now…. we’re doing what we can with painkillers and anti-inflammatories and stretching in order to give what I can for that day.”
