The East Carolina football coaching search is on after the Pirates parted ways with head coach Mike Houston following a Week 8 loss to Army. It was the fourth loss in five games, and ECU athletics director Jon Gilbert made the announcement on Sunday, calling it a “performance-based decision” and saying, “We have not seen the results that we all want.” Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, as the Pirates need three wins in their last five games to become bowl-eligible.
With ground breaking soon on a new indoor facility and a strong fan and donor base, Gilbert is confident the ECU football head coach will attract top candidates as he heads a national search. If you love the Pirates, or just want to know who will call the shots for ECU football in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at HoistTheColours, the 247Sports affiliate that covers East Carolina.

Top East Carolina football coach candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target is LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan. An up-and-coming 37-year-old offensive coordinator for the Tigers, Sloan worked with explosive offenses at Louisiana Tech before coming to LSU as quarterbacks coach in 2022. He held that position for two years and then added offensive coordinator to his title this season.
LSU’s offense has been impressive this year despite the loss of Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels at quarterback and receiver Malik Nabers, both top-six picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. If Sloan wants to make the jump to be a Group of Five head coach, taking over at his alma mater would be a logical fit. See more candidates at HoistTheColours.
