The Yankees have made their first move of the 2024-25 offseason and it was an obvious one. The team has exercised their club option to bring RHP Luke Weaver back to the team.
Weaver was a revelation for the Yankees in 2024. In 62 games, he pitched to a 2.89 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP while converting four saves. Most of that came as a middle reliever but once the team moved Clay Holmes out of his closer role, the 31-year-old Weaver won the job.
The right-hander’s dominance from the regular season carried over into the postseason where he pitched in 12 of the Yankees’ 14 playoff games. In that span, he pitched to a 1.76 ERA — allowing just three runs in 15.1 innings pitched — and a 0.56 WHIP. He also struck out 16 batters while converting four saves.
According to Spotrac, Weaver’s 2024 salary will be around $2.5 million.
Holmes became a free agent once the 2024 season ended so it’s unclear what the Yankees will do about their once closer. But bringing Weaver back means they have someone who can close games for them next season whether they re-sign Holmes or bring in another reliever this offseason.
