The Big 12 Championship race is heating up, and Iowa State is right at the top of the standings. The Cyclones are 7-0 with the Texas Tech Red Raiders coming to town after a gut-wrenching loss last weekend.
No. 11 Iowa State was on a bye last week, and it was much needed after a heart-stopping victory over UCF on Oct. 19. Quarterback Rocco Becht punched in the game-winning score with just 30 seconds left on the clock to keep the Cyclones’ perfect record intact. That was a heroic ending to an otherwise uneven outing for Becht in which he completed 43.4% of his passes and turned the ball over twice.
The Cyclones’ defense remained excellent, and that unit ranks 19th in the country in total defense, allowing just 304 yards of total offense per game.
Texas Tech needs to find an answer after suffering a narrow loss to TCU last weekend. The Red Raiders fumbled on each of their final two possessions in a 35-34 defeat, and they’ll need to execute far better in crunch time this weekend. Quarterback Behren Morton exited the first half of that game against the Horned Frogs, but he is expected to be back on Saturday.
The Red Raider defense will have to tighten the screws against Iowa State after giving up 461 total yards, including 344 yards through the air.
