The Mets continue to build pitching depth in the early stages of MLB free agency, claiming right-hander Kevin Herget off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers, per FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Herget, a 33-year-old from Park Ridge, N.J., has pitched parts of three seasons in the majors with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, and most recently with the Brewers.
In 24 career games, Herget owns a 4.64 ERA and a 1.172 WHIP over 42.2 innings pitched. In a small sample size, he was very good for Milwaukee last season, pitching to a 1.59 ERA in seven games, striking out nine and walking only three hitters.
While David Stearns has said that “pretty much the entirety of the player universe is potentially accessible” to the Mets, including big names like Juan Soto, the Mets’ president of baseball operations also knows the importance of these more under-the-radar moves. A couple of prime examples are Jose Iglesias and Tyrone Taylor, two players who came to the Mets will little fanfare but ended up having huge roles in October.
The addition of Herget comes just a few days after the club signed fellow righty Dylan Covey to a one-year major league deal.
