Adam Edström has transformed into the New York Rangers’ hidden gem.
After playing 11 games for the Rangers last year, Edström worked hard and really showed out during training camp, enough to make New York’s opening night roster.
Now, 24-year-old has been a consistent link on the team’s fourth line and continues to mold into an impactful player.
Standing at about 6’7’’, Edström is able to contribute in a variety of different ways, which is what makes him so valuable.
“There are a lot of things to really like about him,” Peter Laviolette said about Edström. “His skating, his attention to detail defensively, his size. He is really a big man on the ice. The physicality he brings. He’s had a lot of good days that goes all the back to rookie camp, that goes through our camp and he’s done really good things to start the year.”
He may just have one goal, one assist and two points on the statsheet, but his individual play goes far beyond the stats.
When he’s on the ice, Edström is always noticeable because of his size obviously and due to his overall game.
“He’s like 6’8’’, so he stands out no matter what,” Jimmy Vesey said. “I think the biggest thing is his skating ability. Most times he is on the ice, he’s the fastest skater out there, so that type of speed opens the ice up for the neutral zone and he is right on top of you on the forecheck. He’s done a great job.”
By watching Edström play, you can just tell he is continuing to get better and better and he’s suddenly emerged as one of the Rangers’ top young players, something that was hard to see coming.
The future is bright for the sleeping giant and he’s only just getting started.
