The San Jose Sharks won their fourth game out of the last five with a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Using NHL EDGE, the league’s player-tracking system, we can analyze each of the scored goals.
Goal #1: Jack Thompson’s first NHL goal
Thompson’s goal came just after the Sharks’ powerplay expired. Will Smith displayed his elite vision when he had time and space with the puck.
Even though it was at the end of a man advantage, the movement away from the puck caused the Blue Jackets defenders to get pulled out of position, creating the passing seem for Smith to find Thompson.
Jack Thompson pots his first career NHL goal, finishing a feed from Will Smith.
He’s the third Shark this season to register his first career goal, joining Smith and Macklin Celebrini.
Fabian Zetterlund registers the secondary assist on the score.

Goal #2: Kirill Marchenko finally beats Vitek Vanecek
After what looked like the Sharks had good neutral zone coverage, San Jose was too far away from the player they were supposed to cover.
Marchenko got the puck at the center red line, walked into the offensive zone, and made a pass to Damon Severson. Mario Ferraro did not play Severson close enough, allowing him to get off a slap shot.
Cody Ceci then wasn’t close enough to Marchenko, who found himself one-on-one with Vanecek and beat him with a backhand-forehand deke.
Vanecek would get the last laugh with 49 saves and a win.
Goal #3: Alexander Wennberg walks through all three Blue Jackets for the overtime goal
“The one thing I know is to shoot high glove on Elvis,” Wennberg said postgame.
Wennberg saw a seem after getting the puck from Fabian Zetterlund. He maneuvered through two Blue Jackets before he turned Zach Werenski the wrong way and beat Elvis Merzlikins over the glove for his second overtime goal of the season.
