Kaitlyn Schroeder had a Fall finish to remember.
The University of North Florida redshirt sophomore finished the season with back-to-back ASUN Player of the Week awards, giving the program three for the fall.
Schroeder, a Jacksonville native who transferred from Alabama, finished solo sixth in the Hurricane Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Club in Coral Gables with an even-par 216. She shot 69 in the second round and led the team with 11 birdies. The Ospreys posted a fall-best fifth in the 11-team field.
Schroeder’s previous Player of the Week award was for an eighth in the Evie Odom Invitational at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va. She shot 2-over 212, with a 69 in the final tournament.
Schroeder finished among the top 10 in three of her four fall starts.
Schroeder also made it three weekly ASUN awards in a row. Teammate Casilda Allendesalazar was the Player of the Week for a fifth in the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Club.
First Coast players battle at Conservatory
The inaugural Florida State Golf Association Legends Championship had a strong First Coast presence in all three age groups at the Conservatory in Palm Coast.
It was close but they had to watch the hardware go South.
The close call came in the 75-79 year-old division when Sam Robinson of Ponte Vedra Beach lost to Jim Carley of Ormond Beach in a playoff when Carley birdied the first hole. Both finished regulation at 1-under 143.
Joe Campagna of Fleming Island finished second to Brian Sachs of Newberry in the 80 and over division by three shots, at 2-over 146.
And John Milton of Jacksonville tied for third in the 70-74 division at 5-over 149, three shots behind winner Stan Zabytko of Jupiter. Bruce Moskovciak of Jacksonville (152) tied for sixth.
JAGA Scholarship Classic set at Deerwood
The Jacksonville Area Golf Association Scholarship Golf Classic will be Nov. 25 at the Deerwood Country Club, with the proceeds going to the organization’s 50-year-old program to raise money for college students from Northeast Florida.
The four-person scramble will begin at 9 a.m. Registration information is at jagascholarshipclassic.com.
The JAGA Scholarship Trust has raised more than $2 million for more than 400 students since 1974.
Former JU star scores albatross
Alexandre Vandermoten, a former Jacksonville University player, celebrated his advance from the PGA Tour’s first-stage qualifier to the second stage by stopping off at San Jose and making an albatross at the 522-yard par-5 17th hole. After hitting his drive, Vandermoten holed a 5-iron from 215 yards out. … Retired Admiral Jack Scorby, the former commanding officer at NAS Jacksonville, made a hole-in-one at the base’s course. He used an 8-iron from 104 yards out at the par-3 ninth hole on the Blue Course.
