There’s little debate that Florida State has been the most disappointing team in college football in 2024. Coming off an undefeated 2023 regular season and ACC title, Mike Norvell’s squad had a preseason top-10 ranking. However FSU has face-planted, going 1-9. Norvell signed an eight-year contact extension following last season that will pay him more than $84 million, with a buyout that currently exceeds $60 million. That complicates any plans to seek a new FSU football head coach. However, Norvell shook up his staff after FSU’s latest loss, firing offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, along with receivers coach Ron Dugans.
If Norvell is retained, he’ll need to lead a huge overhaul of the program this offseason, and these will be critical hires in that process. Top Florida State defensive coordinator candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target for defensive coordinator is SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons. Symons worked on Norvell’s staff at Memphis, so there’s a connection. His defenses at SMU have shown plenty of improvement. The Mustangs have been a top-20 team nationally in yards per play both in 2023 and 2024 after being outside the top 100 in that category in 2022.
He’s a big part of the reason why SMU remains alive for a College Football Playoff spot this year. Norvell needs a jolt on this side of the ball as the Seminoles rank 15th in the ACC in total defense and 14th in scoring defense, so Symon could be a logical fit. See more candidates at Noles247.
