Ducks Recall a Pair of Players from San Diego, Send McTavish to IR

The Anaheim Ducks announced on Sunday they have recalled forward Sam Colangelo and defenseman Tyson Hinds from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL.

Additionally, they have placed Mason McTavish on Injury Reserve with an upper-body injury retroactive to Nov. 8. He is eligible for activation at any point, as he’s one week removed from the date when his injury was sustained.

The Ducks will embark on a two-game road trip to Dallas to play the Stars on Monday and to Chicago to play the Blackhawks on Tuesday. They now have an active roster of 23 players, including 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders.

Colangelo (22) was selected in the second round (36th overall in 2020) four years ago from the Chicago Steel of the USHL and made his NHL debut at the end of the 2023-24 season, scoring in his debut against the Calgary Flames. He has one point in three career NHL games while averaging 12:33 of ice time per game.

“The biggest thing for me isn’t really offense. That’s something that comes instinctually to me,” Colangelo said during rookie camp when asked what he needed to show to earn a call-up to the Ducks in 2024-25. “I’m just trying to prove to the coaching staff that I can play in my own zone, be responsible, get pucks out, and not be a liability out there.

“I think if I do that, the offense will come. I’m just trying to play a 200-foot game, win all my battles, and try to transport the puck up the wall.”

Through 14 games in the AHL this season, Colangelo has scored nine goals (most on the Gulls by a considerable margin) and added five assists.

When adding his total this season with his four-game stint in the AHL before his call-up in 2023-24, Colangelo is a point-per-game player with 18 points in 18 career games.

2023-24 was his senior season at the University of Western Michigan. He finished the season eighth in the country in goal scoring with 24 goals in 38 games.

Tyson Hinds (21) has yet to make his NHL debut. He was selected in the third round (76th in ’21) three years ago from Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL and played all 71 games in the 2023-24 season in the AHL with the Gulls.

In 2023-24, he scored two goals and added eight assists. This season, he has tallied two goals in 13 games.

“A lot of stuff, but just small details,” Hinds said during rookie camp on what he was most working on to improve heading into 2024-25. “My puck plays, some of my decisions, and just keep moving my feet.”

The Ducks placed McTavish (21) on IR after he suited up for the team’s first 13 games of the season, scoring two goals and six assists, including five points in his last five games.

Though the point total was coming around, it was noticeable to those who watched closely that he was less explosive than he’d been in the past. He was losing battles he normally wins along the wall and in small areas of the ice and couldn’t establish a significant presence in front of the net.

Neither specifics surrounding the injury nor a timeline were given when the Ducks announced McTavish’s move to IR, but his status will be closely monitored.
