Cleveland Monsters defenseman Denton Mateychuk has been named AHL Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Mateychuk, who was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft, collected four goals and three assists through four games with the Monsters last week. Having played 15 regular season games in 2024-25, Mateychuk has registered six goals and 16 points.
In Cleveland’s game against the Utica Comets last Monday, Mateychuk had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win before being held pointless in the Monsters matchup against the Toronto Marlies Wednesday. In a two-game set with the Providence Bruins on Friday and Sunday, Mateychuk notched three goals and two assists, including two overtime winners.
With this being his first pro season, Mateychuk has transitioned seamlessly to the pro game. Having been named the most valuable player during the WHL playoffs last season, Mateychuk played a lot of hockey in 2023-24 but that has not affected him one bit.
Although he is down with the Monsters currently, Mateychuk will likely make his NHL debut in the near future while also being a likely candidate to make the jump to the NHL full-time next year.
