Virginia football will be in the market for a quarterback when the portal opens up. UVA quarterback Anthony Colandrea is expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens up in a week’s time, sources confirm to Wahoos247.
A source says Colandrea told a few players his decision after the game on Saturday night.
The UVA signal caller was the Cavaliers’ starter under center until this past week, when Virginia head coach Tony Elliott made the decision to go with Tony Muskett for the rivalry game against Virginia Tech.
“So I sat back after the last game and just kind of looked at where we were offensively, and we’ve been struggling for the last four games or so,” said Elliott after the loss to the Hokies about why they made the chance at quarterback. “It wasn’t all AC’s [Anthony Colandrea] fault – and that’s what I told him. I said, this is not necessarily anything that you did in particular in the last game. He didn’t have a ton of protection around him, but I just felt like I needed to do something to help the offense. And I know that there have been times when Tony was inserted in the game, he gave us a little bit of a spark.”
Colandrea had a 2-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio over those last four games mentioned by Elliott, and was sacked 31 times in the last six contests, including nine times in their loss to SMU last weekend.
At the start of the 2024 campaign, when the ‘Hoos went on a 4-1 start, Colandrea averaged 242.2 passing yards per game with eight touchdown passes and only four picks. However, in the last five games, he failed to throw at least 200 yards and has turned over the ball at a higher rate.
