Scoring his first pro goal on Wednesday night, Hunter Brzustewicz, showed why he’s one of the most exciting and talented prospects in the Calgary Flames organization.
After getting off to a slow start in his first taste of pro hockey, it looks like he’s finding his footing. Extending his point streak to six games, the just-turned-20-year-old Brzustewicz finally netted his first goal in the American Hockey League against the Winnipeg Jets’ AHL affiliate Manitoba Moose, in his first season with the Calgary Wranglers.
“It was tough at first,” the young defenseman told reporters at the Saddledome post-game when asked about getting along with the team. He explained it took time to get comfortable after joining a new locker-room and not knowing many faces, which would be hard for many.
“It’s coming along really well” he added.
His recent success seems to back that up. During his six-game streak, Bzustewicz has a goal and six assists. With some Flames defenseman popular in trade rumors during a rebuilding year, you never know when a call up may happen.
The talented blueliner was originally selected by the Vancouver Canucks but was traded to the Flames in the Elias Lindholm trade. At first, Brzustewicz’s lack of elite prospect status raised eyebrows. With the recent hot streak so early in his pro career, those same critics are probably much quieter.
Flames GM Craig Conroy was able to ink Brzustewicz to an entry level contract in early March. After signing, he had this to say about Calgary: “I see more potential here than I did in Vancouver, so it’s great.”
Clearly, he understood the path the Flames are on and can see the opportunity with a young rebuilding franchise. Flames fans were probably happy to sign him, but even more happy to hear him declare their team as having more “potential” than Vancouver.
Flames fans will likely have to wait a bit for him to be NHL ready but could be in for a treat when he is.
