The Mets have agreed to terms with outfielder/designated hitter Jesse Winker, according to league sources. That deal, which is pending physical, signifies that the team has pivoted to an offseason plan that likely does not involve a deal to bring back Pete Alonso.
According to league sources, the Mets now expect that Alonso will sign elsewhere. The team genuinely likes Alonso as a person and player, and hoped to come to an agreement. But the sides have not come close on years and dollars.
Similarly to how the Yankees pivoted after losing out on Juan Soto last month, the Mets are now at the finish line with Winker. They also expect to add a reliever, possibly a top one like Tanner Scott.
Alonso is not known to be in agreement with any other club at this time. As long as that remains the case, he could of course sign with anyone. But it is now clear that the Mets are acting with the expectation that Alonso’s time in Queens is over.
The team’s most likely infield configuration will emphasize youth and versatility. They see Mark Vientos as best suited to play first base among the internal candidates, but will give Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, Luisangel Acuña and others reps at multiple infield positions in spring training.
