Penn State’s setbacks on the grand stage seem to be the only hole in an otherwise outstanding 11-year stretch under head coach James Franklin. The Nittany Lions lost to Notre Dame in heartbreaking fashion in the College Football Playoff semifinals, with Franklin falling to 1-15 against top-five teams at Penn State. The 2025 Penn State football roster is starting to take shape, with multiple players set to depart for the NFL. Former No. 1 overall quarterback recruit Drew Allar is expected to return next season, though, giving Franklin a player to build around as he tries to get back to the College Football Playoff. Penn State football roster news
Quarterback Drew Allar announced his plans to remain with Penn State as a senior prior to the playoff run, which came one day after backup quarterback Beau Pribula entered the transfer portal. Franklin will try to add more talent around Allar next season, especially since star tight end Tyler Warren is leaving for the NFL. Warren had 104 receptions for a team-high 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns this season.
The Nittany Lions did not have a single wide receiver catch a pass in the loss to Notre Dame, so that will be a position to keep an eye on. Franklin already secured transfer portal commitments from USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson and first-team All-Sun Belt wide receiver Devonte Ross (Troy). He also added a key piece up front when Texas A&M offensive lineman TJ Shanahan committed to Penn State.
Shanahan appeared in nine games at center and guard for the Aggies in 2024, playing 285 snaps. Defensively, Texas A&M edge rusher Enai White also committed to Penn State out of the transfer portal. Franklin is also set to host a transfer defensive back target in the coming days. Get more football roster updates at Lions247.
