All season long Manchester City’s defence has been plagued by injuries. Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, John Stones and Kyle Walker have all struggled with injury issues this season. Coming out of last night’s 4-2 defeat to PSG it now appears that Manchester City’s defence has been hit with a fresh injury concern. This time, it’s Ruben Dias, and his potential absence could be a hammer blow for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Ruben Dias was substituted at halftime of Manchester City’s defeat last night. The Portuguese international was booked early in the first half of last night’s match at the Parc des Princes. It wasn’t immediately clear if Dias was substituted due to the yellow card he received or if he had suffered another injury. Following last night’s match, Pep Guardiola clarified the situation surrounding Ruben Dias and his substitution.
Speaking after his team’s defeat Pep Guardiola revealed that Ruben Dias has asked to be taken off at halftime. Guardiola told the media: “Ruben didn’t feel good. He asked to be replaced because he didn’t feel good. I don’t think [he will have a long layoff] but he was not fit and said he cannot play the second half.”
Ruben Dias had only just returned from injury during Manchester City’s 6-nil win over Ipswich Town. He lasted 45 minutes last night before he was substituted. It isn’t a stretch to say Manchester City isn’t as good a team without Dias. He is their defensive leader and he inspires his teammates. His absence was immediately felt during the second half of last night’s match.
It now remains to be seen just how Dias is set to be sidelined for. But his injury has followed a familiar pattern for Manchester City’s defenders this season. Two games in four days after coming back from injury was too much for Dias. The hope is that Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis can now step up and play and help alleviate the issues that has been ever present for Pep Guardiola’s side this season.
