So far Manchester City have made three signings during the current transfer window. Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush have all joined the world champions. Each player has the potential to be a fine addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. But there does appear to be two more positions that Manchester City must strengthen during the transfer window. That is in midfield and at full-back. Now a new report indicates that City have three targets in mind to make it the ideal transfer window for the Premier League champions.
Paul Hirst has reported for the Times that Manchester City are still determined to sign a midfielder during the January transfer window. Furthermore, Hirst reports that Atalanta midfielder Ederson is a potential target for City. A loan move for Douglas Luiz could also be on the cards as Manchester City look to strengthen their midfield. Hirst also reports that City have also enquired about signing Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso. It is also reported by Hirst that Juventus have slapped a £68 million price tag on Cambiaso to deter City from making a move for the versatile full-back. Hirst adds that Cambiaso could become a summer transfer target for the world champions if they can’t sign him this month.
If Manchester City can add a midfielder and a full-back it would be the perfect transfer window.
So far City have improved their squad this month. Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush will improve Pep Guardiola’s squad once they settle into life at the Etihad. But watching City’s defeat to PSG last night you can see the remaining holes in Pep Guardiola’s squad. That is at full-back and in the heart of midfield. If they can fill those two holes in their squad it would be the perfect transfer window for Manchester City.
Matheus Nunes was exposed by Bradley Barcola at right-back last night. Especially in the second half. That wasn’t Nunes’ fault as he isn’t a right-back. But the fact he is playing there shows that City do need another full-back. Andrea Cambiaso would fill this hole in Pep Guardiola’s squad if City do move for the Italian international. You do get the sense that they may have pay Juventus’ asking price to sign Cambiaso. Based on Manchester City’s weaknesses it does feel like a move they have to make if they want to salvage this season. Nunes struggled last night and Rico Lewis looks to be out of form and tired. The case for City to sign another full-back this month is mounting.
Manchester City’s midfield woes are well-documented. It was and remains the biggest hole in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Watching PSG’s youthful midfield tear City’s ageing midfield apart last night just further emphasised this point. A move for Ederson makes sense for Manchester City. He’d immediately add what City’s engine room lacks. It would likely take a mammoth offer from City to tempt Atalanta to sell the Brazilian midfielder. But at this point City must try and sign Atalanta’s midfield workhorse. If that move fails a loan move for Douglas Luiz does make sense. Either option would work but I believe City should try and sign Ederson before moving onto Douglas Luiz.
If Manchester City could sign a full-back and a midfielder during the current transfer window it would make this window the ideal one for the world champions. Ederson, Douglas Luiz and Andrea Cambiaso would be fine additions to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Now we wait to see if City will move for any of those three players during the current transfer window. You do get the sense that City simply have to if they want to fill all of the holes in their squad this month.
