Another day, another Dawg.
Harris English parred his last 12 holes on a chilly, gloomy day at the Torrey Pines Golf Course at La Jolla, Calif., and won the Farmers Insurance Open by one shot over Sam Stevens on Saturday. It was the second victory in a row for a former University of Georgia player, following Sepp Straka at last week’s American Express.
Former Bulldog players have now won 45 PGA Tour titles.
English had the 54-hole lead at 9-under and won despite a closing 73. The temperatures dipped to the mid-50s, a brisk wind blew off the Pacific Ocean and a beefy South Course layout resulted in a final-round scoring average of 74.756, a record high for the tournament that has been at Torrey Pines since 1968.
English finished at 8-under-par 280, the highest score for a winner since Brandt Snedeker shot 6-under 282 in 2016.
Harris English moves up on FedEx Cup, money lists
English is projected to jump to fourth on the PGA Tour FedEx Cup points list and sixth on the money list. His $1,674,000 first-place check brings his earnings this year to $1,701,236.
English made one birdie all day, at the par-5 sixth hole. But that was in response to the last of two early bogeys and he never flinched after that.
English, 35, did it with his short game, superb lag putting and a veteran’s guile. He won his fifth PGA Tour title by getting up and down for par seven of nine times, dropping a series of tough 4-foot putts, then two-putted for par on his last three holes, from 46 feet, 4 inches at No. 16, from 55-6 on No. 17 and 24-8 feet at No. 18.
Sam Stevens, Andrew Novak had their chances
Stevens (68, the day’s low round) was one shot off the lead with the par-5 18th to play. However, he hit his second shot into the water, giving himself little chance of making birdie, and wound up with a gutty par after getting up and down from 91 yards.
Andrew Novak (74), a fellow St. Simons Island, Ga. resident with English, was within a shot of the lead but hooked his second shot at the par-4 15th hole left of the green from 133 yards out and missed a 10-foot par attempt. He had birdie looks on his next two holes but missed both putts, then sent an 84-foot eagle chip attempt 12 feet past the hole at No. 18. He finished solo third at 6-under.
Sungjae Im (71) and Kris Ventura (71) tied for fourth at 5-under.
PGA Tour moves to Pebble Beach
The Tour moves north in California for next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am but will return to Torrey Pines Feb. 13-16 for the Genesis Invitational. The Signature Event was moved from the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles because of the wildfire devastation in the Pacific Palisades area.
World No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler will make his 2025 debut at Pebble Beach, after recovering from a hand injury he sustained on Christmas Day.
