SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The sport of men’s golf has been taking some haymakers lately, with some less than desireable TV ratings at some events and the continued schism between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
A recent announcement by the PGA Tour that President Trump is engaged with men’s pro golf has raised a bit of hope but just how involved he will be remains to be seen. Nonetheless, despite some of the world’s best golfers still toiling on the LIV Golf circuit and only facing off against the top PGA Tour players four times a year in the majors, fans will get to see them interact in a different form in two upcoming projects.
Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris will all have an appearance in the upcoming Netflix movie Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler.
Maybe the 1-2 punch of Happy Gilmore 2 and the Netflix docuseries Full Swing 3 will bring some fun back. Chad Mumm is involved in both projects. He’s executive producer on Full Swing and a co-producer on the Gilmore sequel.
“The movie couldn’t be more uplifting, more celebratory for the game of golf. I think we need that. Golf is going through a great moment right now, as a sport, as a thing from a participation standpoint. Golf’s never really been healthier as a sport, as a game, as a hobby and really as a lifestyle now,” Mumm said. “And I think this is going to be great for pro golf, too. One, to sort of bring the world of golf together in the movie. There’s not just PGA Tour players that are there and I think Adam [Sandler] really wants to celebrate pro golf through his lens and sort of positive Happy Gilmore lens. I think it’ll be really fun.
“And then for Full Swing season 3, we deliberately thought of this season as sort of a re-set back to Season 1. Season 2 was high drama, more LIV schism, you know, Brooks Koepka winning the PGA just drama, drama, drama, June 6th, you know, the announcement day. Season 3 is really trying to get back to the playful fun of Season 1. Getting to know people you never expected, to have huge personalities, really taking you inside the ropes in a way that like, I think, gets back to that, to what made Season 1 so appealing … and just move past all this pro golf drama and get back to the great character study that general audiences love.”
Happy Gilmore does not have a release date yet but it will be in 2025. Full Swing 3 hits Netflix on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
