A day after blowing through PGA National with a 59, Jake Knapp had a fairly pedestrian sceond round. shooting a 1-under 70. Daniel Berger had briefly tied him atop the leaderboard, but after 36 holes, Knapp is still the leader. At 13 under, he’s a shot clear of Matthieu Pavon. Michael Kim, Doug Ghim, Jesper Svensson and Berger are tied for third at 11 under. Ghim had the best round Friday with a 8-under 63.
While Knapp’s 59 was the headliner Thursday, amateur Luke Clanton making the cut and earning his PGA Tour card was the big story Friday. The Florida State senior shot a 5-under 66 with his family and friends there to root him on. He capped his round with a birdie at the last.
For a second straight day, the PGA Tour suspended play for the 144-man field for darkness, but, just like at the end of Thursday’s first round, the six golfers still on the course had teed off on their final hole and chose to finish, and they all did.
The cut came in at 5 under and some notable names are going home, although one golfer who missed the cut is sticking around for the weekend for his other job on NBC.
The purse at the Cognizant Classic is $9.2 million, with $1.656 million going to the winner along with 500 FedEx Cup points. In addition, the winner, if not already qualified, earns a spot in the 2025 Masters.
