Say it ain’t so-M-G.
Jose Iglesias, who carved out a major role both on the field and in the clubhouse with the Mets last season, has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres, per multiple reports.
Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Iglesias will earn $3 million if in the majors, and can earn another $1 million in incentives.
While the door had been still slightly ajar for a potential return to Queens for Iglesias, with the Mets looking to solidify their backup infielder plans for 2025, president of baseball operations David Stearns all but closed that door completely in mid-February when he said the Mets were likely to use internal, younger options to fill that role.
“I think where we are now for that role on our team, it’s important for us to keep some avenues open for some of our younger players,” Stearns said in Port St. Lucie. “It’s important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot. It’s really tough to freeze your entire position player roster. We did that for a portion last year and we actually got away with it.
“But there easily could’ve been a circumstance where we got stuck with a completely frozen position player roster. So, having some flexibility there in that role is frankly probably needed for us right now.”
Iglesias, 35, originally signed with the Mets on a minor-league contract but was in the majors by the end of May. By the All-Star break, Iglesias had taken over as the everyday second baseman, while his song “OMG” became a rallying cry for the team and fan base.
In 85 regular season games, Iglesias slashed .337/.381/.448 with four home runs and 26 RBI while playing terrific defense up the middle.
Iglesias told the New York Post last month that “it’s not over until I sign with someone else,” saying the way last season ended — with a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS — left a bad taste in his mouth.
“It hurts because we started something that definitely isn’t finished yet,” Iglesias said. “It took a lot for us to get where we got. That’s what hurts. I definitely get that it’s a business. But it definitely hurts.”
With Iglesias now officially gone and Nick Madrigal likely to miss the entire season with injury, the backup infielder role could go to either Brett Baty or Luisangel Acuña.
