Ajax are trying to register Matheus for the Europa League after all, as per Voetbal International. The Brazilian was not previously eligible after joining in January, but the Amsterdammers hope to benefit from special regulations with Remko Pasveer out injured.
Francesco Farioli confirmed during the press conference on Sunday that the Eredivisie leaders have submitted the application to UEFA to have Matheus eligible to play. “We did that a few days ago and we are now waiting for the outcome.”
Whether you are allowed to register a new goalkeeper depends on the number of goalkeepers on the A-list. It is unclear what arguments Ajax might use to register Matheus, but according to Farioli the request is in line with UEFA rules.
“It seems that there is a possibility that the request will be honoured based on a rule. We have to wait, it is up to the lawyers to arrange it.”
Remko Pasveer will not be there in any case, the experienced goalkeeper was injured in the Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday and will be out of action for several weeks.
If Matheus cannot be registered, Jay Gorter is expected to be the goalkeeper against Eintracht for the second leg this Thursday.
