Gary Lineker has spoken again about his unfortunate incident playing with the England national team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, during their 1-1 draw against Ireland.
During a chat with Micah Richards and Alan Shearer on Match of the Day, the former Barcelona player recalled the bowel problems he suffered in the middle of the World Cup match.
“I hadn’t been feeling well the night before…. But I didn’t tell anyone because I wanted to play. About 15 minutes into the second half I start to cramp and I think ‘Oh, God, I’ve got a pain here,'” the 62-year-old Lineker began to explain.
“The ball comes out on his left side and I slid for it, and as I was doing that I relaxed a little bit…and boof. ‘Oh, my God,’ I said to myself. And I’m sitting on the ground and it’s all there.
“You can see me look up and Gary Stevens comes over and I remember him saying to me, “Links, what’s wrong?” and I said, ‘I’ve shat myself’. I felt like crying. Thank God we had the dark blue shorts and not the white shorts.”
Shortly after thie incident, Lineker was replaced by Steve Bull.
Lineker’s 2010 version of his poo incident at the 1990 World Cup
Lineker already confessed in 2010 in an interview he gave to BBC radio that he defecated on the pitch during the match against Ireland in the 1990 World Cup.
“I wasn’t feeling very well at half time. I tried to make a tackle on someone, stretched too far, relaxed and umm… I was lucky it had rained and I could do something about it, but it was embarrassing. It was during the 1990 World Cup against Ireland. You can see me rubbing myself on the ground like a dog trying to clean myself. It was the most horrible experience of my life,” Lineker explained.
“I never had so much space in a game after I did that.”
