Todd Boehly‘s first season as Chelsea owner has been less than satisfactory for the American business tycoon.
The team’s form has been far from justifying the vast investment made by the new owner this year.
Sitting in 11th place in the Premier League, with the possibility of European football next season fading, the London club are on a run of six consecutive matches without a win, the last three of which have been defeats.
Chelsea‘s loss in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid is has been a source of extra strain for Todd Boehly.
Chelsea squad in crisis
The following Premier League tie against Brighton similarly ended in defeat.
English media outlet Telegraph reported that the billionaire owner entered the Chelsea dressing room to vocalize his displeasure with his team’s season thus far.
According to the English outlet, Boehly stated to the players the team’s current form was “embarrassing”.
The current interim manager, Frank Lampard, subsequently added some choice words to Boehly‘s outburst.
Boehly and Lampard’s words come as a desperate attempt to give the squad the impetus needed for a comeback against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
Chelsea will be dreaming of advancing to the Champions League semi-finals but trail by two goals on aggregate.
Boehly, who was accompanied by partners Behdad Eghbali and Hansjorg Wyss, also berated the players after spending more than 600 million euros on transfers – an all-time record for a club in one season – to then finish mid-table in the Premier League, which he again he described as “embarrassing,” according to the Telegraph.
It now remains to be seen whether Boehly‘s words will have a positive impact on the squad in their Champions League second leg against Real Madrid.
Fortunately for Lampard, a 2-0 deficit is far from impossible to overturn.
