Manchester City‘s late charge toward another Premier League title continued Wednesday, as Pep Guardiola‘s side defeated West Ham United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium
The match was momentous for Erling Haaland, the talismanic forward who broke the Premier League’s record for goals in a single season — in his first year playing in the country.
Haaland’s 35th league goal of the season helped City return to the top of the table with five games remaining.
What Haaland said about his record
Postmatch, Haaland expressed his delight about breaking a record once held by Premier League icons Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.
“Special night,” the 22-year-old said. “A special moment, I am really happy and proud, what more is there to say?”
The striker took up a Jack Grealish pass in the 70th minute and chipped Lukasz Fabianski to send the Etihad into raptures. But though Haaland was elated to set a new goalscoring mark, he’s keeping his feet on the ground.
“I cannot keep thinking about these records or else I would become crazy,” he said. “I will go home, play some video games, eat something, then sleep.”
Next up: Leeds, then Real Madrid
Haaland has scored in each of his past three appearances and will be looking to make it four in a row when Man City host Leeds United on Saturday. Then comes the highly-anticipated trip to Spain to face Real Madrid, in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal.
Haaland has scored 51 goals in all competitions — including 12 in the Champions League — but will be put to the test against Madrid. Los Blancos slipped to the third in LaLiga on Wednesday and are focusing on the cup competitions, which might not be great news for City in their quest to win a first-ever European Cup.
